LSU is #1 in the nation despite losing arguably the best player in the country on offense and defense from last year in the forms of JaMarcus Russell and LaRon Landry, along with two receivers taken in the first round. If there were a playoff last year, LSU would have been favored to win it with the way they were playing at the end of last season, despite losing two close SEC road games earlier in the year.
Anyone who might try to defend the bowl system last year would inevitably point to the riveting Fiesta Bowl with it's wacky finish. On the flip side, Florida routs Ohio State in Tempe a week later, USC mauls Michigan in the Rose Bowl, and LSU shows Notre Dame doesn't belong on the same field in New Orleans.
